Summer News from Finnvox

NightwishKuuntelu

The fine tuning and trimming of the new Nightwish album will be soon over. Holopainen, Kinnunen and Karmila got all the tracks of the forthcoming Imaginaerum mixed and several test masterings have been done during summertime. In the end of May we had a listening session at Finnvox together with the band (without Anette), Karmila, Kinnunen and Stobe Harju & Petri Alanko working on the movie score. Tuomas brought some champagne and Finnvox took care of some salty and sweet snacks. There will be still some work with instrumental-, orchestral- and surround versions, and “stop press” the album will come out before Christmas!

Arto Tuunela received a gold record of Astronautti by Pariisin Kevät. This means 10.000 sold albums. Finnvox congratulates it's own "golden boy". Pariisin Kevät has toured all summer for wide range of audience. Especially at Himos Festival one was able to spot - delightfully and perhaps strangely - heavily tattood guys in addition to young girls fighting the space in the front row and singing along to all the tracks. The rock 'n roll guys have been more typical sight at Major Label, the other band of Arto's, gigs. We have great news for the fans of both bands. Arto with his band mates are writing new material for both upcoming records.

TT Oksala In Memoriam

Music legend Timo Tapani Oksala passed away in December 2010. A gathering in his memory was held at Restaurant Dubrovnik on 6th of February 2011 together with his closest friends, musicians and other prominent figures in Finnish music industry. Seeing so many notable and legendary people paying their final respects to TT inspired me to write an overview of TT's career as a producer and sound engineer.

In his career TT took part in numerous projects and the sheer number of hit records he was involved in is simply astounding. The listing below should demonstrate the impact of TT's work in Finnish rock music, especially in the 80's and 90's when domestic music began to dominate the Finnish charts.

This listing includes records TT produced, recorded or mixed as well as records he made in collaboration with other professionals. It is not complete and due to TT's productivity some records are very likely missing. Majority of these records have been made at Finnvox – a fact of which we are very proud.

Mika Jussila on the red carpet of Cannes!

The annual Midem Music convention 2011 held in Cannes, France was my seventh participation in a row. Although it is nice to leave the cold, snow and darkness behind and travel to the sunny and warm Riviera, I feel it's also important to take part in promotion, marketing and sales of Finnish popular music abroad organized by Music Export Finland.

By participating I announce the seriousness of the intent of Finnvox to expand its international business and sales and also spread our customer base beyond our national borders. The Midem Music convention is a great opportunity to meet international customers as well as possibly forming some new contacts. It's a great place to see other Finnish players in the business, with almost all being at the same place at the same time.

In the Finnish music export business it is easy to only see the already successful bands and their newest achievements and latest albums. Few consider that there have been many of us professional technicians working on and creating these records by hit artists that sell millions. The expertise of the studio business in Finland is world class and also affordable when compared to other foreign countries. We should be able to sell this know-how and expertise in the international market. And I don't just mean the studios, recording, mixing and mastering but especially individuals, producers, engineers and other technical experts.
